Nathaniel Hansen: Producer, Director, DP, Editor

Stories and storytelling define and inform all people from every culture on the planet. To search out, interpret, and re-tell stories that enlighten, inform, motivate and inspire, humble, teach and ultimately motivate change, is my wildest dream – one I’m happy to be living.

I’m passionate about story telling and I enjoy both documentary and narrative filmmaking. Documentary has a special place in my heart as it’s the medium that gave me my start.  The uncertainty of the story in a vérité documentary project is a thrill that is both maddening and inspiring.

I enjoy the creative process, and the constant challenges presented to me as a filmmaker no matter how prepared I think I am for a given project.

I have a background in theatre and on stage as a musician and actor. I received an AA in Theatre and a BA in Cultural Studies from BYU-Hawaii in 2001, and in 2004 I received an MA in Documentary Film from Emerson College in Boston. In 2004 I started a production company, and have shot just about every type of production you can imagine: documentaries, viral videos, reality TV, mocumentaries, commercials, narrative fiction, corporate training videos, etc. Fortunately for me I’ve worked with some talented people on every project. They leave me a better filmmaker after each project, and with each new project I’m able to pull from years of experience and collaboration. Currently I have one documentary project in production and two documentary projects in pre-production.

TECH:
I get asked often what I shoot on, so here’s the essential list:

Sony PMW-EX1 – HD CineAlta: Three 1/2-inch-type Exmor Full-HD CMOS Sensors that records to solid state memory cards. Full res HD, wonderful workhorse HD camera.

Letus Extreme: 35mm Lens Adapter: Letus has been making adapters for a couple years now, and I had the privilege of meeting up with the inventor Hien Le at his home in Portland Oregon. The adapter mounts to the front of my EX1, and allows me to put any 35mm lens (Nikon, Canon, Zeiss, PL mount cinema lenses) on the front. This allows for some really nice focal length options, and really allows me to push the envelope on my portrait pieces with extremely shallow depth of field.

Cartoni Focus F103 Carbon Fiber Tripod: A wonderfully smooth head and light weight 1 stage tripod system. There are other systems (legs) that I would love to add to the collection (mostly that would get me really close to the ground) but this tripod has taken a real beating over the last 2 years and it’s still going strong.
